I attended an amazing workshop on Hydroponics a while ago, and was really excited to try growing my own herbs and vegetables using the Hydroponics Kratky Deep Water Cycle (DWC) method.
With the cost of living crisis, I’m hoping that growing my own herbs and vegetables can save some money, and because I’m growing it from home, at least I know that there will be no harmful pesticides in them.
The Kratky DWC container is a food safe heavy duty plastic container – it is black in colour to reduce the sunlight shining through at the bottom where the water is housed to prevent as much algae growth as possible.
This one that I’ve got has 8 drilled holes in the lid, as well as 8 x 50mm net cups with some clay pellets to hold your seedlings firmly in place.
Hydroponics made easy
If you are fairly new to Hydroponics, then the Kratky Deep Water Culture System is a really great place to start.
This is actually my second harvest using this Hydroponics Kratky DWC method as we grew the most delicious tomatoes and basil the first time around. I actually replanted them because they were getting too big into our Small Kitchen Garden boxes. It’s amazing because we are still getting tomatoes!
When planting, you need to remove all the soil from the roots of the seedlings, then, you need to add each seedling to a basket, and you can use the clay pellets to hold your seedling firmly in place. Then, you can fill your container with water.
Once you’ve filled the container, add a table spoon of hydrogen peroxide, which you can get at your local pharmacy, as well as one table spoon of plant nutrients.
I’ll list some of my favourite herbs and tomatoes below – if you give this a try, please let me know how it goes! Happy planting!
