I absolutely loved reading the Lord of the Rings books as well as watching the movies! I recently painted some LOTR mini figurines and thought wouldn’t it be fun to create my own Middle Earth inspired terrarium using an old fish tank. Here’s my LOTR Fishtank terrarium…
The Fish tank was really old and had a bit of a crack at the bottom. There was also some lime scale on the inside of the glass. I tried to scrub the sides with some bicarb of soda as well as some white spirit vinegar. It removed some of the lime scale, but I wasn’t expecting miracles as this fish tank was over 20 years old!
After adding in a layer of rocks to create a “false bottom” or drainage area, I then crushed some activated charcoal and sprinkled it on the rocks. To create a bit of a barrier or separator between the rocks and the soil, I soaked some spagnum moss in water, and squeezed the water out and made a little “pancake” shape with my hands. I then patted the moss onto the rocks to act as a divider.
Then, I added some premium potting soil as well as a rather large chunk of driftwood to create the backdrop for the main feature, which would be the Fellowship figurines.
I added in some little rocks to create a path, then added some ivy, tom thumbs, a beautiful ficus, some moss and other terrarium friendly plants. The saved the best for last and added the LOTR figurines.
