The Perfect Place for Your Terrarium
Terrariums are relatively maintenance free but do thrive in indirect light, such as a window sill. Here are some useful terrarium care and maintenance tips to help keep your terrarium looking it’s best.
Watering your Terrarium
Closed Lid terrariums do not need a lot of watering because they create their own greenhouse environment.
Check your terrarium at least twice a month to see if it needs a few drops of water, or if there is too much condensation on the glass, open the lid to let the moisture evaporate for a few hours. (Remember to replace the lid to form an air-tight seal). Check out these tips on how often to water your terrarium.
What can go wrong?
Unfortunately, with any living organism, you will need to keep an eye on your terrarium… if you place your terrarium in a very hot and sunny spot, you could run the risk of “cooking” your plants in the glass container.
The signs to look out for are too much condensation on the inside of the glass and your plant might start looking limp and the leaves could turn yellow or brown. If this happens, it could also mean that there was too much water added to the terrarium and you will need to take the lid off to try to get the moisture & light balance right.
If your terrarium does not get enough light and there is too much moisture, mould could form which will unfortunately give your terrarium a rather unpleasant smell.
Terrarium Care and Maintenance
Whether it’s a closed or open lid terrarium, cut off any leaves that show signs of yellowing or damage, and carefully prune back the plants to maintain the look and feel of your terrarium.
